Shoegaze is Big in Japan

Do you remember all the shoegaze in Lost in Translation’s soundtrack? (The noisy, over-distorted guitars riffs and melodic but distant voices of bands from the 90’s such as My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary chain). Not only did I start associating the genre with Japan after watching the movie, but I have also come to find out how popular the genre actually is in Japan. A “Big in Japan” phenomena. In any rock record shop in Tokyo “Shoegaze” is a main section; and concerts for otherwise unknown international bands have amazing demand (Ringo Deathstarr came to Japan in April, July and December this year). Here you have some japanese examples on the genre.

「Lost in Translation」という映画に出たサウンドトラックのシューゲイザーを覚えていますか。うるさくて歪ませるようなギターの音と遠くから聞こえるような声で歌うジャンルです。この１９９０年代のジャンルの中「My Bloody Valentine」とか「Jesus and Mary Chain」などがけっこう有名でした。あの映画を見てから、シューゲイザーを聴くと日本が思い出されます。それだけでなく、実際にこのジャンルは日本でけっこう人気があるんですよ。「Big in Japan」ということではないかと思っています。どの東京のロックレコード店に行ってもシューゲイザーのコナーがありますよ。コンサートも人気があって、海外であまり有名じゃない「Ringo Deathstarr」というバンドは、今年３回も日本に来ました。下記に日本の音楽の三つのジャンルの例。
